Lung cancer c 3: Fluorescence bronchoscopy: clinical dilemmas and research opportunities

Despite the considerable advances that have occurred in the management of many malignant diseases, the outlook for lung cancer sufferers remains depressingly poor. In the UK the prospects of surviving 5 years persist at only 5%, while the annual death rate exceeds the death rates for cancers of the breast, colon, and prostate combined. Although surgery for early stage lung cancers offers a rela...

Angiogenic squamous dysplasia in bronchi of individuals at high risk for lung cancer.

Lung carcinogenesis is assumed to be a multistep process, but detailed understanding of the sequential morphological and molecular changes preceding invasive lung cancer remains elusive. To better understand early lung carcinogenesis, we initiated a program of fluorescence bronchoscopy in smokers at high risk for lung cancer. In the bronchial biopsies from these subjects, we observed a unique l...

In-vivo kinetics of inhaled 5-Aminolevulinic acid-Induced Protoporphyrin IX fluorescence in bronchial tissue

BACKGROUND In the diagnosis of early-stage lung cancer photosensitizer-enhanced fluorescence bronchoscopy with inhaled 5-aminolevolinic acid (5-ALA) increases sensitivity when compared to white-light bronchoscopy. This investigation was to evaluate the in vivo tissue pharmacokinetics of inhaled 5-ALA within the bronchial mucosa in order to define the time optimum for its application prior to br...

Fluorescence bronchoscopy for the early detection of lung cancer.

Fluorescence bronchoscopy is currently being developed as a method for detecting early lung cancers, carcinoma in situ, and dysplastic lesions of the tracheobronchial tree. The ultimate aim is to detect pre-invasive neoplastic lesions and eradicate them before they have become invasive. This proactive approach is one of several new strategies that are being developed to detect lung cancers at e...
